The 2019 Prairie Garden "Growing Food"

The 2019 issue of The Prairie Garden will focus on today’s biggest trend in gardening: growing our own food. These days, people want to eat food that’s fresher and tastier than anything they can buy at a supermarket, and they want to know where it comes from – preferably from not too far away. So our very own patch of Earth, no matter how small, is where it’s happening!

As always, The Prairie Garden aims to be a guide for gardeners of all skill levels in the short-season gardening zones of Canada and the US. Over 50 articles and hundreds of photos will offer info and inspiration about all aspects of growing food, including heirloom tomatoes and vegetables, perennial edibles, miniatures and container planting, prairie-hardy fruits, raised bed and permaculture techniques, wild foraging, and new ways of preserving the harvest. This year’s guest editor, community garden organizer and specialty grower Tiffany Grenkow, has made sure that everyone from environmentalists to gourmet chefs will find something to interest them. Our authors include popular garden writers like Niki Jabbour (Veggie Garden Remix), Sara Williams (Growing Fruit in Northern Gardens), Sheryl Normandeau (frequent contributor to The Gardener magazine), Christine Hanlon (Out of Old Manitoba Kitchens), and Thunder Bay’s Gardening Guru Melanie Mathieson, among many others. This issue also includes an index for the years 2014–2018.
